Born in Metzingen, Germany on July 8, 1885, Hugo Ferdinand Boss first started his company in the year of 1923. In 1930, due to the economic downturn in Germany, Hugo Boss filed bankruptcy, but rebuilt his business back up in 1931. Hugo Boss first started with menís work wear and uniforms. With his line of uniforms, Hugo Boss was involved with the production of the uniforms for the German Naziís during the World War II.
Hugo Boss passed away on August 9, 1948. Hugo left his company to his son in-law, Eugen Holy who then passed it on to his sons, Jochen and Uwe Holy. When Jochen and Uwe took over their grandfathers company, Hugo Boss, they introduced menís suits, which were different from those of the other designers of that time. Jochen and Uwe were making the menís suits with a lighter high quality fabric, opposed to the heavy thick and stiff fabric that other designers were using. The company took a new direction and started to go overseas, and market their brand with different countries.
Throughout the years a big percentage of the company Hugo Boss, was bought and exchanged through the stock market; Marzotto S.P.A. becoming a majority of a shareholder. When the Holy brothers retired, the company went through many CEOís. The company began to grow overseas, and branch out in different directions of styles.
After expanding the company overseas, in the mid 1980s, Hugo Boss started making casual wear, such as sweaters and sports jackets for men who couldnít afford the high priced suits. In 1990, a womenís collection was debuted, but it was discontinued just a year later, in 1991. In 1998, the company took a chance on a new womenís collection and was a successful. Hugo Boss went in a different direction, which included a new line for eyewear, cosmetics and accessories.
The Hugo Boss Company now has five different collections; Boss Black, Boss Selection, Boss Orange, Boss Green and Hugo. The Boss Black collection is classier attire that businessmen and women can feel confident in. The Boss Selection targets a more high-end luxurious suit collection for men. Boss Orange is a vibrant playful collection for both men and women. For menís sports wear, there is the Boss Green collection. Hugo is a line for both men and women and it is an ultramodern collection.
Hugo Boss, the business, is an example of a company that has gone through many changes from owners, CEOís, apparel and still remains a big success. Although Hugo Boss the founder of the company is no longer around, his name will always remain in the fashion industry.
